Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a basement without underpinning if I dig very carefully?
No. If you're excavating below your existing foundation level, you must underpin — there's no way around it. Digging carefully doesn't change the fact that you're removing the soil your foundation is bearing on. Any competent PE will require underpinning, and BCA won't approve the works without it.
