Wong Construction: Structural Building for Singapore Landed Homes
What We Actually Do as Wong Construction
We're Wong Lye Pte Ltd — a BCA General Builder Class 2 licensed contractor based in Singapore. When people search for "wong construction," they usually find us because we've been building structural works for landed properties across Singapore since 2014.
Our scope is deliberately focused: additions and alterations (A&A), full reconstructions, rebuilds, piling works, structural modifications, metal fabrication, and solar installations — but only for landed homes. We don't do HDB flats or basic renovations. That's a different licence and skill set entirely.
We started as a logistics business in 2011. The construction side began when we built our own warehouse racking systems in 2014 because we couldn't find contractors we trusted to do the job properly. Neighbours saw our metalwork and structural modifications, asked us to build theirs. Commercial and industrial clients followed — over 1,500 projects later. When those same commercial clients started asking us to work on their landed homes, we said yes, but carefully.
How Our Building Process Actually Works
Every landed project starts the same way: we need to understand what's structurally possible before anyone gets excited about design ideas. We've seen too many "my neighbour extended his kitchen, so I can extend mine" conversations end badly because the neighbour's work was illegal or structurally unsound.
We have an in-house architect and Qualified Person (QP). This means we handle URA and BCA submissions as part of the build process, not as an afterthought. The regulatory side isn't something we outsource or leave to chance — it's integral to what we do.
Our typical landed projects involve load-bearing wall modifications, foundation work, steel frame extensions, reinforced concrete pours, and structural calculations that need professional engineer approval. This isn't carpentry or finishing work. It's heavy building that requires proper engineering, proper permits, and proper execution.
What Makes Our Approach Different
We believe homeowners deserve accurate advice before they commit, not after. The construction industry has too many contractors who say "yes, can do" to everything, then figure out the problems later. We'd rather tell you upfront if your idea won't work structurally or regulatory-wise.
For example, if you want to remove what looks like a partition wall, we'll check the structural drawings first. If it's load-bearing, we'll design proper beam and column support before touching anything. If your extension idea exceeds plot ratio limits, we'll tell you before you've spent money on detailed drawings.
Our commercial and industrial background shows in how we approach residential work. We're used to working with engineers, dealing with structural loads, coordinating with authorities, and getting things right the first time. Residential clients appreciate this systematic approach, especially on complex landed projects.
When to Use Wong Construction vs Other Contractors
We're the right fit when your landed project involves structural work: removing or modifying walls, adding floors, building extensions, foundation repairs, steel fabrication, or full reconstruction. We're also right when regulatory compliance is critical — A&A submissions, structural modifications that need PE approval, or work that affects your property's structural integrity.
We're deliberately not the right fit for standard renovation work like flooring, painting, kitchen cabinets, or bathroom fitting. Our sister company Larry Contractors (contractors.com.sg) handles that scope — they have the HDB renovation licence and finishing expertise for that type of work.
If your project mixes structural building with finishing work, we'll handle the heavy building phase, then coordinate with appropriate finishing contractors for the rest. This division of labour usually gives better results than trying to find one contractor who claims to do everything well.
Why Landed Homes Require Different Expertise
Landed properties in Singapore have unique challenges. There are setback requirements, plot ratio calculations, height restrictions, and neighbour considerations that don't exist in commercial work. The structural systems are different too — typically reinforced concrete frames or load-bearing masonry, often decades old, with modifications that may or may not have been done properly.
We've worked on landed homes from the 1960s through to new builds. Each era has different structural approaches, different materials, different potential issues. Understanding what you're working with structurally is essential before making modifications.
The regulatory side is equally important. URA has specific requirements for landed extensions and modifications. BCA has structural safety requirements that must be met. Getting this right requires experience with both the technical and administrative sides of landed construction.
FAQ
Are you the same as Wong Construction or other Wong contractors?
We're specifically Wong Lye Pte Ltd (UEN 201404127Z), a BCA General Builder Class 2. There are other contractors with "Wong" in the name — we're the ones who specialise in structural work for landed properties and have the commercial/industrial background.
Do you handle both the building permits and the actual construction?
Yes, we have in-house architect and QP, so we handle URA and BCA submissions as part of our service. We don't just build — we ensure the regulatory side is sorted properly from the start.
What's the difference between your company and Larry Contractors?
Larry Contractors is our sister company with HDB renovation licensing — they handle finishing work, renovations, and interior modifications. We focus on structural building and heavy construction. Different licences, different expertise, often working together on larger projects.
Do you work on all types of properties?
No, we deliberately focus only on landed homes in Singapore. We don't do HDB flats, condos, or purely commercial work anymore. This focus lets us specialise properly in landed property requirements and regulations.
If you're planning structural work on your landed property and want advice based on actual building experience, we're happy to discuss your project. Message us on WhatsApp at https://wa.me/6591072601 to start the conversation.
